Shredding

European Metal Recycling shreds over 40,000 tonnes a week of consumer products such as vehicles and large household appliances, a growing proportion of which are specially pre-treated to remove any hazardous substances.

Our eight shredders in the UK range in size and specification, can recycle just about anything. They are served by an extensive national network of feeder yards operated by ourselves and our suppliers. Shredding can also be used as a means of secure destruction of prototype and reject materials.

As one of the largest machines of its kind globally, our mega-shredder at Liverpool is driven by a 10,000hp motor and has a rotor diameter of three metres. Moving hammers shear the contents of the mill against fixed anvils at rotary speeds of over 420rpm, allowing a vehicle to be shredded in just 30 seconds.

An automated control system monitors the operation, ensuring any problems are swiftly resolved and feeding an appropriate flow of water into the mill to prevent dust emissions. The system also employs powerful air cyclone technology to draw off the lighter fraction of rust, dust and plastics.

Manual picking helps to remove copper armatures and other items, while rotary magnets extract top-quality shredded steel for distribution to steelworks and foundries worldwide. At the same time, over-band magnets and eddy-current separators recover the metal fines from the light fraction.

A conveyor system carries the remaining fraction of mixed heavies, made up of non-ferrous metals, rubbers, aggregates and dense plastics, for onward transfer and treatment. Our state-of-the-art shredders can typically achieve recycling rates of up to 75% by weight.
